Radiator
The radiator that I chose is a 3 x 120mm model, the
Black Ice Stealth GT. I also chose my favorite Evercool aluminium fans.
I was reminded why this was maybe not such a good choice of fan numerous times during the build. The first was when I figured out that the fans were slightly bigger than normal fans and because of that, the holes didn’t line up with those on the radiator. This was an easy fix though; a quick trip to the table saw to take off 1/16" or so and they fit perfectly.
For the shroud, I bent pieces of aluminium and put a rubber gasket over them and it works like a charm. I also decided to screw the fans together with an aluminium bar. This made it easier to handle and more convenient for the powder coater.
Back Panel
The back panel seriously is one of the most important parts of a case and also one of the hardest to get right. To be honest, Sangaku’s back panel is disappointing at best to I really sought to make one that worked and I lucked out in that case.
I drew out the design for the back panel in Adobe Illustrator, checking the measurements numerous times. I then transferred these measurements onto the aluminium using the drawing as a template.
Then I used the end mill with a very long (too long in fact) mill bit. I actually ended up going over these again with a more appropriate bit.
After a few hours of milling, the back panel starts to look like something and the hardest part is over. After that, I used the same technique to mill the PSU hole, and also a little lip around the I/O shield area to accept a custom milled I/O shield.
I also took this time to make a very well designed card retention mechanism that this time, actually works. I used a thin piece of aluminium and a small mill bit to do this. It attaches using a couple of thumb screws.
